The Makassar-style veneer runs to a deep brown streaked with black, and the multi-layer varnish brings out the grain. Solid lid, so the collection stays out of the light. A ten-watch wooden box, black suede-effect lining, 50 mm cushions. 33 × 26 × 9 cm.
Makassar ebony is known for its figure: dark brown streaks over a lighter ground, never twice the same. The veneer used here follows that pattern, under a multi-layer gloss varnish that gives the grain depth.
It is the wood of prestige car dashboards and Art Deco furniture. On a watch box it brings a warmth that black lacquer does not have.
On most boxes the interior dividers are covered in fabric on every face. Here, the top of each divider is varnished, in the same Makassar as the shell; only the side faces are lined in suede-effect fabric.
Open the lid and you see a grid of varnished wood instead of a textile border. That is a detail found on high-end finishes.
Filmed in our workshop on the six-watch Makassar. Veneer, varnish and divider finish are identical; only the capacity differs.
The same finish exists with a glass top, in six watches with the Makassar 6, and in eighteen with the Makassar 18. In plain lacquered wood, see the 10-watch glossy black. The rest of the wooden watchbox range.
