Seven coats, then polishing

This is what separates a real lacquer from a thick varnish. The finish goes on in seven successive coats, each sanded before the next, then polished. The result has the depth found on concert pianos and vintage car dashboards — light enters the lacquer instead of bouncing off it.

The trade-off is known: gloss holds fingerprints. A dry microfibre cloth is enough, but you have to accept it. If that bothers you, the matt black version exists in six watches.

Ten watches, grey interior

The interior is grey suede-effect rather than black. On a box this dark outside, the grey creates a breath when it opens and sets off black-dial watches better.
