An oiled nubuck, not a smooth leather

The nubuck is buffed on the grain side before oiling: the surface stays matt and velvety where a smooth leather would return light. On a 45 or 47 mm case, that absence of shine avoids the flat-panel effect a glazed leather would produce across such a width.

The barbour treatment

Barbour-style oiling drives the fat into the fibre. The hide becomes denser, darker, and takes moisture without stiffening. It is a treatment that enters the hide, and it can be re-fed with use.

Oval holes, as on original straps

The adjustment holes are oval, not round. The design comes from original military straps, where the oval allowed finer adjustment on a hide of substantial thickness. On a 26 mm strap that detail is noticed at once.
