Rapport London: an English house founded in 1898

Rapport is a London family house, now in its fourth generation. The EVO MK3 is designed in Paddington and hand-assembled in Dublin. This is not a marketing detail: hand assembly shows in the tolerances, in how the lid sits, and in the evenness of the lacquer.

The heart of the matter: a direct-drive motor, no belt

This is what sets the MK3 apart from ordinary production. The motor block, taken out of its case, makes it obvious.

The motor shaft drives the watch cushion directly. No belt, no pulley, no transfer gear.

A belt drive places a wearing part between the motor and the cushion. Direct drive removes that intermediate stage: it is a design decision, not a finishing option.

Torque is transmitted in full, rotation stays constant over the years, and there is no intermediate part to replace. It is also what explains how quietly it runs: the motor works with nothing mechanical in between.

The motor is also non-magnetic and does not disturb the movement of your watch.

The finish: three coats of gloss piano lacquer

The case is solid wood, finished in gloss piano lacquer. Three successive coats, sanded between each pass. Close up, the result reads immediately: the depth of the colour, the absence of orange peel, the crispness of the edges.

The finish comes in several colours — black, red, Rolex green, silver grey, blue and white — each lacquered by the same process.

The Rapport London logo sits in relief on the front. On an object meant to stay in view — bedroom, dressing room, study — that level of finish counts.

Nine programmes, one indicator light

An LED on the front shows the active programme. You move from one programme to the next with the left-hand push button. No screen, no app to install: a selector and an indicator light are enough. Position "zero" switches it off, and the winder comes to a stop in the vertical position.

Programme 6 — 900 turns per day, bidirectional — is the one we recommend for a Rolex or an Omega. If you are unsure about your calibre, bidirectional remains the safe choice: it suits almost every automatic movement.

Between cycles the MK3 pauses and comes to rest in the vertical position. The mainspring relaxes and the tension stays at an intermediate level. This alternation of rest and rotation is central to how the MK3 works.

Mains or batteries: the compartment that changes everything

The MK3 runs on mains power or on two LR14 batteries. The compartment sits under the case and opens without tools.

That dual supply is genuinely useful. It opens two uses that mains power alone rules out:

• The safe — no socket inside, and you would rather not drill. On batteries, the MK3 runs for more than 18 months.
• Travel — second home, hotel, office. The winder follows without a cable.

Use standard alkaline batteries, Duracell or Energizer. Avoid rechargeables: their variable voltage disturbs the regularity of the motor.

A cushion that really does take every watch

This is where many winders disappoint. The MK3 cushion adjusts by compressing, and adapts to every watch size, for slim wrists and broad ones alike.

In practice it takes a Small strap — a woman's wrist, a 26 mm case — just as readily as an XL strap worn over a suit sleeve. We have fitted a small-cased vintage Omega and a Panerai with 26 mm lugs, neither of them forced.

It is a criterion worth weighing if your collection is varied, or if the winder is to serve several watches over time.

Assembling two or four MK3 units on a single socket

The MK3 is modular. As the collection grows you do not buy new furniture: you add cubes, and you can group them in an assembly box.

That box is a wooden frame, finished in the same gloss black piano lacquer as the winders and lined with black felt. The cubes sit side by side, and — this is the main point — the whole assembly runs off a single mains cable. Four winders, one socket.

It follows directly from what we have observed since 2011, the year we became an official retailer of the brand: the MK3 is the most reliable winder we have ever carried. The absence of a belt contributes directly, by removing the main wearing part of the drive mechanism.

A third year of warranty commits the retailer, not the manufacturer. We grant it only where field experience justifies it.
