Alligator, not crocodile
Mississippi alligator is distinguished by wider scales and a more regular grain than crocodile. On a 22 mm half that means fewer plates but larger ones, and a pattern read at a glance. This is the width where the hide gives its best.
Two-tone tanning, drum-dyed
Two-tone tanning leaves the hollows darker than the raised areas. On large scales that contrast draws each plate instead of flattening the hide. The result is never identical from one strap to the next — which is what a dye that penetrates does.
A rubber lining under an exotic hide
It is a rare technical proposition: a rubber lining beneath alligator. It extends the working life of the strap by limiting the effects of perspiration, which a leather lining handles poorly on a watch worn every day. It is shown on a Rolex 5513, by way of illustration.
