What a Mondani volume actually holds

A Mondani book breaks down each reference component by component: dials and their variations, bezels, hands, indexes, crowns, case backs, bracelets, clasps, case and serial numbers, alphanumeric codes, boxes and original papers. Every watch published carries an estimate, revised with each new edition.

That figure is what separates the house from art publishers. Faced with a second-hand watch, the question is not whether it looks right. It is whether the dial matches the case, whether the marking is consistent with the year, and what the piece is actually worth.

Encyclopedia or monograph

Two families of books, two different uses.

The encyclopedia, to cover several ranges

The three-volume Rolex encyclopedia covers the entire production from 1905 to today: 648 pages in a slipcase. It is the tool for someone following several lines at once, who needs to compare two models or follow a dial evolution across ranges.

The monograph, to go all the way on one model

The GMT-Master I and II book, the Submariner, Sea-Dweller and DeepSea book and the self-winding Daytona book reach a level of detail no encyclopedia can hold — twelve different dials illustrated for a single reference, for instance.

The single volume, for a first purchase

Between the two, Rolexmania gathers the whole range in one volume, sorted by type and alphabetically. You can find a model without knowing its reference — exactly where a beginner stands.

The most sought-after ranges

The Datejust is the most traded Rolex on the second-hand market and the least documented: monographs go to the sports watches. It is covered in the encyclopedia and in Rolexmania, along with the Day-Date, Oyster Date, Air-King and Turn-O-Graph.

The Submariner carries the most variations, and the sharpest value gaps between close examples. The volume devoted to it also covers the Sea-Dweller and DeepSea, from references 1665 and 1680 to the current 126610.

The Daytona has its own book on the self-winding version alone, from the Zenith-powered 16520 to the Cerachrom models. The GMT-Master has its own, in a 2024 edition, with the bezel combinations the market calls Pepsi, Batman and Rootbeer.

For steel alone — Rolesium, 904L, the Comex watches, the Rolex-powered Panerai — the Acciaio book takes the material as its subject rather than the model.

Rolex, but not only

The collection includes a Patek Philippe volume on the Nautilus and Aquanaut. This is the segment where documentation is thinnest: on those two lines the value gap between neighbouring references is considerable, and reference literature is scarce.

Vintage is judged on details that must be compared

An early Rolex does not read like a recent one. The dial has turned, sometimes brown, sometimes green. The lume has darkened or cracked. The marking changed several times over the life of a single reference.

None of these states can be inferred — they are compared. The Vintage Rolex book photographs pieces at a scale where the grain of a dial is visible, and reproduces period advertising — a dating source current catalogues do not provide.

A note on the language

These books are written in English and Italian. No French edition exists.

In practice this matters little. The value of the book lies in the reference tables, the serial numbers, the compared dial photographs and the estimates: all of that reads without translation.
