On an alligator emboss, brown is the tone where the gap with a genuine hide is smallest. We prefer to say it plainly: this is an embossed leather, not an exotic hide.
What the hand patina changes
An emboss straight from the press is uniform and flat. The patina applied by hand darkens the scale joints and lightens the crowns, which recreates the play of shadow of a real hide. It is that work, not the embossing, that makes the price of the piece.
