Barbour-oiled leather behaves differently

Few tanneries still work this kind of raw hide: denser than calf, longer to prepare, and less regular from batch to batch. In exchange it has a suppleness calf does not reach, and it takes repeated flexing without marking. Barbour-style oiling gives it its depth.
