Khaki in leather, on a Submariner 5513
We photographed this strap on a Rolex 5513 — the Submariner that followed the 6538 of Goldfinger. Khaki points back to the military origin of the NATO strap, but in vegetable-tanned leather it loses everything that might have remained of fatigues. Military gone to town.
Vegetable tanning: why it matters
Vegetable tanning takes weeks where chrome takes hours. It costs more and it is slower. In exchange, the leather develops a patina instead of cracking: it darkens, it takes the grain of your wrist, it tells a story after two years.
Why a leather NATO strap is hard to make
Nylon is just over a millimetre. Leather, lined, should be double that — and would no longer pass under the case. Our artisans hold under 2mm with two thicknesses of leather, one a hypoallergenic lining. No lug-to-case clearance causes difficulty.
A La Boîte à Montres exclusive
This strap exists nowhere but here. It is handmade in Arezzo, Tuscany, by a workshop we work with directly. No reseller offers it, no marketplace copies it — to copy it, you would first have to know how to make it.
The NATO principle, in leather
One strap, passing under the case and looping back to the buckle. You open no spring bars, you reach for no tools. And the watch is held at two points instead of one — that is what makes this type of strap safe. Stainless buckle and keepers.
Fitting on video — removing a Rolex bracelet
The video shows a nylon NATO strap, but the movement is exactly the same: the strap passes under the case, the spring bars stay put, no tools are needed. Leather fits precisely this way.
Not for diving
Better written here than left for you to discover. This strap is not waterproof and never will be: it is leather. If your watch goes in the water, you need a nylon NATO strap alongside. Many of our customers own both and switch by season.
