The NATO strap, in leather

The idea sounds simple: take the NATO construction — the single strap that passes under the watch — and swap nylon for leather. It is not. That is precisely why almost nobody does it. Gold brown is the colourway that best explains the range: on an Omega Speedmaster it warms the steel without taking anything away. And in two years it will have darkened.

Vegetable tanning: why it matters

Vegetable tanning takes weeks where chrome takes hours. It costs more and it is slower. In exchange, the leather develops a patina instead of cracking: it darkens, it takes the grain of your wrist, it tells a story after two years.

Two leathers, and under 2mm

This is where the difficulty lies. A NATO strap has to pass under the case: beyond a certain thickness, it no longer does. Yet this strap layers two leathers — the top leather and a hypoallergenic lining — and stays under 2mm. It fits every watch.

Made in Arezzo, exclusively for us

Arezzo, in Tuscany, has worked leather since the Middle Ages. Our NATOSCAN straps are handmade there, exclusively for La Boîte à Montres: you will not find them anywhere else. That is the difference between a product picked from a catalogue and a product designed with a workshop.

NATO fitting, leather looks

The strap slides under the case and wraps around the wrist, exactly like a nylon NATO. No tools, no spring bars to remove. The watch rests on the strap and is held by both spring bars: if one fails, the other holds it. Stainless steel buckle and keepers.

Fitting on video — removing a Rolex bracelet

The video shows a nylon NATO strap, but the movement is exactly the same: the strap passes under the case, the spring bars stay put, no tools are needed. Leather fits precisely this way.

One clarification: this strap does not go in the water

Better said plainly. Leather is not nylon: no sea, no pool, no washing machine. If you want a strap for diving or a summer by the water, take a nylon NATO strap — that is what it is for. The NATOSCAN is for the rest of the year.
